Sittwe (Akyab), Arakan: Myanmar Military from an infantry unit under Battalion Number 233 rampaged in Aung Mingalar Quarter of Sittwe (Akyab) around 10:30M on 17th June 2014 night. Getting drunk, they savaged Rohingya people in the quarter.

“There is a Military infantry unit under Battalion Number 233 encamped at primary school in Aung Mingalar Quarter. Second in Command (Du Htet Yin Hmuu) and other 15 military personnel of the unit got drunk and rioted in Aung Mingalar Quarter around 10:30PM on June 17, 2014.

They threw stones and broken pieces of bricks at Rohingya homes with Lights (switched) on. They destroyed gates of some Rohingya homes.

They scolded and abused every Rohingyas encountered on their way. They threatened to shoot people down. They beat and kicked every Rohingya passer-by. Basically, they savaged Rohingya people. They rampaged in the village. Having rioted to their heart’s content, they left after a few hours” said a local Rohingya to Rohingya Vision TV.

“When U Shwe Hla, a community elder, requested not to behave barbarously, one of the military pointed his gun at him and threatened to kill him. If Military of a country behave irresponsibly and like gangsters, what would you call it? Total lawlessness!

This morning, the Second in Command summoned community elders of the quarter for a meeting in their camp. ” he continued.

Aung Mingalar Quarter is the only remaining Rohingya quarter in the downtown of Sittwe (Akyab). All other Rohingya quarters and villages in and around Sittwe were destroyed and wiped out by Rakhine (Magh) terrorists with the help of Government’s Security Force during the violence in June 2012. The quarter is currently blocked by Government and Rakhine extremists from all possible sides. Rohingyas in the quarter are living like in prison.
