Military Captain Extort Money from Rohingyas under Various Pretexts

Maungdaw, Arakan (Rohingya Vision) — A Myanmar Military officer in southern Maungdaw Township has been extorting money from local Rohingya on different pretext for the last few weeks, say the locals.

The officer is the captain of the light infantry unit based at ‘Byuhaa Hmuu’ hamlet of Alay Than Kyaw ‘(Haishshu Rata)’ village tract in southern Maungdaw. He threatens, harasses and blackmails the locals on his informers’ says and beat them (i.e. the locals) for ransom.

Although the Rohingya fishermen go out for fishing to the sea with permission, the captain accuses them of not informing the military camp while going for for fishing. And then, they torture them for ransom.

Besides, they loot the fishes to their hearts’ content from the fishermen. When the fishermen try to protest, they are harassed and beaten. It is happening almost every day.

Some of the people that recently became the victims of money extortions by the captain and his atrocious acts are as follows.

On June 12,

1) Hashimullah Ahmed Hussein, 35, Kyat 120,000;

2) Zafar Fazal Ahmed, 32, Kyat 750,000;

3) Twahir Abul Hussein, 47, Kyat 750,000;

4) On June 13, Irshadullah Mohammed Ali, 32, Kyat 100,000; and

5) On June 14, Mohammed Salam Zabbar, 18, Kyat 140,000 (extorted respectively).
