Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Miah has urged Myanmar to take back Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.

He made the call during a meeting with chairman of International Relation Committee of Myanmar lower house ‘Pyithu Hluttaw’ Hla Myint Oo MP on the sidelines of 133rd Assembly of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Switzerland on Wednesday.

In reply to the call, Hla Myint Oo assured that necessary steps would be taken in this regard soon after discussion with the Myanmar government, said a Parliament Secretariat handout.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, there are 200,000 to 500,000 Rohingyas in Bangladesh with only 32,355 of them registered and living in the Kutupalong and Nayapara camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Despite repeated calls from the Bangladesh side, Myanmar authorities did not respond positively to taking back Rohingyas who fled persecution in Arakan (Rakhine) state.

The Deputy Speaker led a 12-member parliamentary delegation to the IPU conference held from October 17 to 21 in Geneva.
