Maungdaw – A Special Branch (SB) Police Officer severely tortured a Rohingya Religious Scholar in Maungdaw Township on January 9, 2016, according to reliable sources.

The victim is identified to be Mv Habibullah (son of) Anu Meah, 32, hails from ‘Chin Khali (Shil Khali)’ hamlet of ‘Alay Than Kyaw (Haishshu Rata)’ village in southern Maungdaw.

It has been learnt that the officer named ‘Kyaw Zin’ entered his (Mv Habibullah’s) premise around 2:00PM of the day while he was cutting down a tree fell down by the cyclone last year. Then, he (the officer) started punching and kicking him for no reason before the rest of other family members.

“The officer extorted Kyat 170,000 from him to stop torturing him. He’s still the pains of the tortures and unable to move,” said a villager.

Similarly, he has beaten several other Rohingyas and extorted money from them in the recent days. Some of them are:

  • Zubair (son of) Jamal, 35
  • Kefayatullah (son of) Ula Meah, 30
  • Abdu Subhan (son of) Afaula, 35
  • Hasal Ali (son of) Muzair, 40

“The police officer is notorious in the region for persecuting the local Rohingyas and committing money extortions. However, no higher authorities take actions against him because they get their shares of money,” said an elder Rohingya in southern Maungdaw.
