Buthidaung, Arakan State- Hundreds of innocent Rohingyas in Maungdaw and Buthidaung were arbitrarily arrested and imprisoned in Buthidaung prison in 2012. They are now chained, shackled, enslaved, forced to do hard labours and cultivate crops in the lands belong to jail authorities and some local Rakhines.

“Hundreds of innocent Rohingyas in Maungdaw and Buthidaung arbitrarily arrested during the violent period in June and July 2012. Since then, most of them have been infinitely detained and imprisoned in Buthidaung prison without any charges and any legal prosecutions. These innocent Rohingya prisoners have been being tortured beyond imagination.

However, that’s what I have heard from other people. But I witnessed them on my own when I recently went to see my relative in the prison. He was, too, imprisoned for no reason.

He said his inmates are chained, shackled, forced to work as hard labours and enslaved. Since it is time famers cultivated paddy crops, the shackled and chained inmates are now forced to plant paddy seedlings in farms owned by jail authorities and Rakhines.

I saw their (the Rohingya jail inmates’) bodies were full of severe injuries and blood spilling. They were crying. They said were inhumanely tortured during the period of population census as well. No medical care at all.

They want their plight be heard by the world” said a Rohingya who visited Buthidaung prison to see his relative inmate.

“Those people that can bribe jail authority are less tortured. But those who can’t bribe the authority are tortured beyond imagination” he added.
