MAUNGDAW: Authority from religious department extorted money for renovating Masjid in Gorahali village, Maungdaw, on 26th June 2016.
In the incident authority from the religious department demanded 50,0000 Kyats for renovation, and threatened to demolish the mosque if their demands weren’t fulfilled. In order to save the Masjid, villagers had to pay 250,000 Kyats to the Authority.
This Masjid in Southern Gorahali village was an old Masjid and was in need of urgent renovation. Due to poorer condition, Rohingyas in the village just used some tins and woods to renovate.
Religious institutions and Masjids were not allowed to be constructed and renovated at the time of previous military governments. So Most of them have been damaged and are in urgent need of reconstruction and renovation.
Money Extortion and attack on Religious sentiments have been a part of ongoing Genocide on Rohingyas, where footprints of the previous juntas are seen to be followed by new government as well.
