A Rakhine Police Kill an Elderly Rohingya in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan state– A Rakhine (Magh) Police officer severely beat up an elderly Rohingya man in the village of Kyein Chaung, northern Maungdaw yesterday. And that killed the elderly man this (on 29th April 2014) morning.

“Rakhine Police squeeze money from every Rohingya vehicle that passes through or stops at the market of Kyein Chaung (Bawli Bazaar), northern Maungdaw. On 28th April 2014, a Police Officer and a collaborator of his started was beating up a Rohingya lorry driver as he (the lorry driver) was not paying the mount of the money that the Police officer had demanded. The Police Officer is U Kyaw Kyaw Win, a Corporal, from Kyeing Chaung Police Station.

Meanwhile, Liakaut Ali (son of) Fauzu (of age 65) asked them why they were beating the driver and requested them not to beat him up. Liakaut Ali is an elderly Rohingya man that runs a small grocery shop nearby the place of the incident. Upon that, the Policeman and his collaborator severely beat up the elderly man.

The elderly man became very critical. So, they tried to send him to Kyein Chaung hospital. The hospital didn’t accept the elderly man as he was in too critical condition. So, they sent him to Maungdaw General Hospital last night. However, the man passed away at around 10AM today” said a Rohingya in northern Maungdaw.

“This kind of cases is frequent nowadays. They don’t regard us as human beings. They kill many people in this way. No action is taken against them” he continued.
