Rakhine Extremists Attempt to Create Unrest in Buthidaung

By Rohingya Mirror

Buthidaung, Arakan (Rohingya Vision) — Rakhine extremists have been trying to create unrest by targeting the local Rohingyas in Buthidaung Township as Muslims’ Eid Festival is around the corner, according to the reliable sources.

Nowadays, the market places in the Muslim areas are very alive with the teeming crowd coming for shopping and buying foods for the upcoming Eid Festival. Taking the advantage of the situation, some Rakhine extremists are harassing, beating and robbing the Rohingyas going for shopping.

“They get into the crowd in the market places and accuse the people (Rohingyas) coming for shopping of hitting them physically, stepping on them and pushing them from behind etc. Then, they start scolding, beating and robbing the people. Nobody is taking actions against the hooligans.

They are trying to create violence taking advantage of the situation now. These Rakhine hooligans are not from the local Rakhine community but strangers and seem like they have come from somewhere else. Their treatments are so brutal and like professionally trained torturers” said an elderly Rohingya in Buthidaung.

When asked, the local Rohingyas said that they have not seen these Rakhine extremists ever before in the region.

But they are regularly seen in Buthidaung to be moving to and fro on motorcars and motorcycles nowadays. The locals are of the opinion that they are some members of the Arakan Army (AA) infiltrated into the region to trigger violence during the festival time.

At the same time, the Maungdaw District Police has recently released an announcement ordering the Rohingya people in the district to hand over any kind of lethal tools in their hands — such as catapult, sticks, swords, spears, daggers and explosive materials etc – to the authority. Failing to hand over the lethal tools to the authority will be punishable according to the law, the announcement mentioned.

Therefore, it is likely that the Rakhine extremists and the local authorities (who are mostly of Rakhine extremist background) are conspiring to create unrest in the region during the festival time.
