Rathedaung, Arakan state– Military from an infantry unit under military battalion 551 based in Buthidaung Township seize cattle belong to Rohingyas in villages such as Thammi Hla and Kan Set in Rathedaung Township. Besides, they beat people, harass women and extort money from the people, said a local Rohingya.

“There are two Rohingya villages called Thammi Hla and Kan Set not so far from Annauk Pyin village in Rathedaung Township. An infantry unit under military battalion 551 based in Buthidaung Township is in charge of the security in the villages. Military from the infantry unit raid the villages almost every day and torture the villagers in various means. They beat people, harass women and extort money from the people” said a local Rohingya of Rathedaung.

“On 22nd May 2014 night, the military from the infantry unit raided the village of Thammi Hla and seized the cattle belong to Rohingya villagers. They took the cattle away by force and sold them to Rakhines with a lower market price” reported a Rohingya farmer whose ox was also seized.

“We, Rohingya people, have been locked in an open prison called Arakan. On top of that, the way the military torture us nowadays has become unbearable” he added.
