Maungdaw, Arakan– Myanmar Military are forcing Rohingyas in Maungdaw to provide their family details possibly to complete census enumeration. The process that started on April 21, 2014, could also get rid of Rohingyas’ right to self-identify their ethnicity and categorize them as Bengalis against their wishes.
“A group of eight military personnel of the cantonment at Three-Mile-Region arrived at the village of Nyaung Chaung (Khadir Bil) in southern Maungdaw on 21st April 2014 morning. They looked for administrator of the village. They were not ble to meet the administrator as he was not available at the time. Then, they met with the heads of 100-households and 10-households. They (the military) forced them (the household heads) to provide details on number of famililes, genders, Masjids (Mosques), Islamic Schools, Government Schools, households, roads etc in the village. Then, they proceeded to other villages such as Pantaw Pyin (Lal Boinna), Baggona, Nurullah, and Gawdusara and did the same things. Besides, they extorted two chickens each from the people of Nurullah village and Pantaw Pyin village” said a Rohingya living in the region.
“When people asked why there were doing that. They replied they were doing that to help locals of the village. However, Rohingyas are worried that they are collecting their details with a view to putting Rohingya under Bengali Race category and hence, completing census. Authority didn’t conduct census of Rohingyas because they tried to abide by the census law of self-identification of one’s ethnicity” he added.
