Maungdaw Police Harass and Torture Innocent Rohingyas for Money

Maungdaw, Arakan: Maungdaw Police all over (Maungdaw Township) has been harassing and torturing Rohingyas so as to extort money from them. Below mentioned cases are some recent incidents.

Case #1: Mangdaw Police Torture a Rohingya for Money

“Mv Mohammed Noor Alam (son of) Mohammed Ariff is a local of Bouddil hamlet of the village of Alay Than Kyaw (Haisshurata), southern Maungdaw. He came to the market of the village of to buy some food stuffs on 19th June 2014 afternoon.

Meanwhile (i.e. around 3PM of the day), six Police Personnel from Maungdaw Police Station arrested him under an arbitrary accusation that he involved in recent burning of village administrator’s home. Now, the innocent Rohingya is being tortured inhumanely, according to a local of the village. Police want to extort huge amount of money from him” Aung Khin, a Rohingya Vision Correspondent, reported.

Case #2: BGP Police Try to Extort Money from a Rohingya for his Sister’s Love Marriage

“Aung Naing is a Rakhine extremist and police personnel posted at the camp in Kyar Gaung Taung (Rabellya) village in northern Maungdaw. He had been previously posted in the village of Ye Dwin Chaung and newly transferred to the above-mentioned camp of 16th June 2014.

Around 11PM on 19th June 2014, he demanded Kyat 30,000 from Kamal (son of) Furuk Ahmed (of age 30), owner of tea shop in the village.

A Love-Marriage (not arrange marriage) between Kamal’s sister, Khurshidah (of Age 20) and a young man named Saddam Hussein from a nearby village of Pha-Wat-Chaung took place on 15th June 2014. Therefore, the police officer said that Kamal had to pay penalty for the love-marriage and hence, is trying to extort money from him.

Since his transfer to the village, he has harassing and torturing Rohingya passers-by. He has been trying to extort money from the villagers, according to a local villager” said Sindhi Khan, a Rohingya Activist in Maungdaw.

Case #3: Police Extort Money from an Innocent Rohingya under Forged Accusation

“Around 5:30PM on June 21, 2014, Mv Asad Ullah (son of) Mohammed Sultan hails from the village of Thandar (Sai’ndar), southern Maungdaw, was on his way to downtown of Maungdaw by his motorcycle. On the way, he was stopped by Police Personnel Kyaw Hlaing from Maungdaw Police Station. Then, the police officer arbitrarily accused him of involving in torching Rakhines’ houses in June 2012. The police officer forced him to pay Kyat 350,000. The police officer threatened him that he would have been arrested and tortured had he refused to pay the money.

Likewise, the police officer arrested Jamal (son of) Noor Ahmed hails from the same village (Thandar) and extorted money from him. There are many examples of money extortions by the police officer. His behavior has become unbearable” said MYARF, a group of activists in Arakan referring to a villager of Thandar.
