Maungdaw District Police Torture Rohingyas for Ransom

Maungdaw, Arakan (Rohingya Vision) – The district police in Maungdaw Township has been constantly harassing and torturing the local Rohingyas for ransom, according to the locals in the township.
The police personnel are from Maungdaw police station serving under the commandment of Maungdaw District Police Commander, Lieut-Col U Shwe Thein. The mainly stop the Rohingyas coming from the rural areas to the downtown, torture them and extort money from them.
Some of the torture and money extortion cases committed by the police are giving below.
On June 3, 2015, Aniti-Human Trafficking Police stopped Mr. Bailla, 38, hails from ‘Tharay Kuntan’ village, at ‘Myoma Kayintan’ village on the way to the downtown of Maungdaw to buy goods for his shop. The police thoroughly searched his body. Since nothing illegal was found in him, the police themselves put four ‘Yaba (WY)’ tablets into pockets.
And then, the police threatened him to imprisonment accusing him of possessing illegal drugs. Therefore, Mr. Bailla had to Kyat 300,000 ransom to avoid the arbitrary imprisonments.
On July 3, 2015, Mr. Dil Mohammed, 50, hails from ‘Doom Say’ hamlet of ‘Kodan Kauk’ village tract in Rathedaung Township, was on his way back after buying some stuff from the downtown of Maungdaw. Meanwhile, the anti-human trafficking police stopped him at Myoma Kayintan Transport-Terminal (Gate) and put a ‘Bangala Sim Card’ into his pocket.
The police accused him of having an illegal Bangala SIM Card in his hand and extorted Kyat 150,000.
On September 3, Rohingya shopkeepers from southern Maungdaw were on their way back after buying goods for their shops. On their way to the Myoma Kayintan Transport-Terminal (Gate), the police from the post before Maungdaw General Hospital stopped them.
They searched their bodies and nothing illegal was found with them. However, one of them was taken to their post before residence of Dr. Khin Maung Hlatt. They insert a Bangala SIM Card into his pocket and extorted Kyat 300,000 from him.
“Tortures and money extortion cases by the police under Lieut-Col Shwe Thein against the innocent Rohingyas are rampant. They simply behave lawless or above the law. And they commit all these atrocities with impunity,” said a local Rohingya Maungdaw.
