Malaysia continues to fight for the fate of the Rohingya – Anifah

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue to fight for the fate of the Rohingya refugees aggressively at the international level to ensure the issue gets the attention it deserves from all parties, especially the government of Myanmar.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, said the Myanmar government needs to take greater action and concrete in resolving the matter. He said concerns over the issue has always voiced Malaysia, including during a visit by Myanmar President U Thein Sien to Malaysia last March.

“During the visit, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has expressed concern over the number of Rohingya refugees in Malaysia and their condition is so weak and uncertain.

“Malaysia also took the initiative to assist these refugees with the ministerial meeting held on May 20 in Putrajaya, which also involved the Indonesian Foreign Minister and Foreign Minister of Thailand to find a solution together,” he said in reply to Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang (PAS-Marang) at the conference Dewan Rakyat here today.

Anifah said in May, he told his Myanmar counterpart U Wunna Maung Lwin that the country should identify the main cause of the Rohingya refugee problem.
At the multilateral level, Malaysia as the 2015 Asean chair was used as a platform to resolve the Rohingya issue.

“Malaysia will continue to highlight the Rohingya issue on platforms such as Asean, the OIC and the UN and continue close bilateral cooperation with Myanmar and other countries,” he added.

As such, he said, Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to help with the residence on humanitarian grounds to accommodate 7,000 refugees are said to reside in the waters of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Gulf at the time.
