Myanmar’s Election Commission announced on June 20, 2014 that it had replaced Major General Maung Maung Ohn for Major Nyan Lin Maung as Arakan State MP representing Tetmadaw (Myanmar Armed Force). Maj-Gen Maung Maung Ohn was ex-deputy Border Affairs Minister of the State and head of the Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC).
According to an announcement by Myanmar’s Election Commission dated June 20, 2014 in June 21, 2014 Issue of State-Owned Newspaper, The Mirror (Kyay Mun), it had replaced six Military MPs with other six new Military Officers as new MPs in six different regions (i.e. Magway, Yangon and Rakhine) in Myanmar. Of them, Maj-Gen Maung Maung Ohn (Military Personal No. 16517) was replaced for Major Nyan Lin Maung (Military Personal No. 33134) as Arakan State MP.
The change in the Arakan State Parliament comes after (former) Rakhine State Chief Hla Maung Tin has resigned from his post recently. (Read the report: HERE)
There are speculations that he has been appointed as an interim Chief Minister of Rakhine State as well.
However, Politicians and Think-Tanks in Myanmar say that Maj-Gen Maung Maung Ohn has been appointed as Rakhine State MP so as to appoint him as Chief Minister of the State in time to come.
During his time as the head of ECC, the ECC dominated by extremist Rakhines has overseen and blocked Foreign Humanitarian Aids for Rohingya IDP several times.
He paid a visit to Meybon Kaman IDP Camps and Pauktaw Rohingya IDP camps in the middle of last May. During the visit, he referred Kaman Muslims in Myebon as “Visitors” and Rakhines as “Hosts” implying that they (Kamans) should behave like visitors and not upset their hosts, meaning Rakhine Buddhists (Please Read More: HERE).
