Five People Arrested in Bangladesh NOT Terror-Group Linked

Najmul Hussein- Analysis and Opinion

Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) arrested five people said to have been of Rohingya origin on November 23, on the pretext of connection with suspected militants or namely Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO).

Initially, Bangladesh media have reported that they were alleged to have links with the suspected militants plotting to destabilize the region. However, it is quite shocking that some Bangladesh media have, without any bases, started to flash their headlines calling the arrested people ‘Terror-Group Linked’ or ‘Top RSO Leaders’ that too, before the investigation findings from the ongoing remanding of the people.

The media has gradually started using internationally sensitive usages like Terror, RSO etc. On the other hand, Bangladesh authority could have arrested them at the airport and deported them following the intelligent reports. But they didn’t. Why? What were they waiting for? To arrest some innocent people and scapegoat them for their own interest?dhaka tribune bdnews24

Therefore, it does seem like the arrests of the people were pre-plotted or pre-conspired, doesn’t it? These people may just fall preys to the pre-planned trap. It is a matter of grave concern especially because it is happening right at the time when the international community are effectively pressuring the Burmese (Myanmar) to reinstate their citizenship, allow them to use the ethnic term they wish and give the rights they deserve.

When UN Secratary General Ban Ki Moon and President Obama visited Burma recently, they used the proper term, ‘Rohingya’ for the Rohingya people. Upon that, Dr. Aye Maung, the chairman of Rakhine National Development Party (RNDP), in an interview to ‘Aung Zaya Tu’ newspaper on November 12 said “if the President Thein Sein recognizes the word ‘Rohingya,’ we will secede Arakan state from Myanmar and merge with Bangladesh or create an independent state with the help of Bangladesh.” That sounds pretty sweet to Bangladesh! Sooner or later, Burma has to recognize the term ‘Rohingya.’ Hence, the Rakhine extremists will attempt to secede Arakan from Burma as they claim.

Here comes the Bangladesh’s strategic and geopolitical interest. It has already been facing chronic border-crisis with Burma. And Rakhines outnumber Rohingyas by 2:1 in Arakan State. Plus, they have armed groups like Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) and Arakan Army (AA) and the half of the Rakhine population inside Arakan are trained militias. Hence, practically speaking, the Rakhines seem more lucrative to Bangladesh over the Rohingyas and fit in her interest perfectly.

Bangladesh has a strong Rakhine population of around 1 Million concentrating especially at the regions bordering Burma. They want their own independent state seceding from Bangladesh as well. So, it is a problem for Bangladesh.

Therefore, in this situation, if Bangladesh can lure the Rakhine extremists like Dr. Aye Maung who was originally from Moosh Khali (Awak Kyun) Bangladesh and ALP armed group that operate in the region with the assistance by Bangladesh and India, hardly does anybody can body stop Bangladesh and the Rakhines from achieving the dream project. It may end Bangladesh’s own internal disputes with the Rakhine Buddhists, too.

The current Awami League government favors Rakhine Buddhists. Hence, the government is liked by the Rakhine Buddhists. Then, Arakan ruled by the Rakhines can serve as a sub-ordinate state to Bangladesh which in turn, acts a sub-ordinate to India.

Nevertheless, everything comes with a difficulty or a price. There is a barrier to their goal. That’s Rohingya community. Thus, they need to either get rid off Rohingyas or paralyse them. But they are enjoying the international sympathy and supports.

Thus, as a first phase of action, it becomes necessary for Bangladesh and the Rakhines to link Rohingya community and their Rohingya Organizations worldwide like Arakan Rohingya Union (ARU) and others that seek advocacy and lobby different governments for their rights to link with the terror groups. Hence, the whole Rohingya community and all the their organizations are the terrorist groups!! All the international sympathies for the people will go down the drain. Then, paralyze the Rohingya community. Simple!

Then, paralyze the Rohingya community. Simple!

That’s where a Netherlands-based voluntary and non-profit organizations like Global Rohingya Centre (GRC) comes into the picture. They perform non-violent activities, good or bad. And so, some of its members legally visited Bangladesh on November and were holding casual discussion in a hotel where doing so is not illegal at all.

There are three four Bangladeshi nationals and one Pakistani whether they are of Rohingya origin or not. Then, out of the blue, there was a raid by Police. There were arrests and allegations. There were media flashing, the wrong projection of the people and misrepresentation of their visit. They were sent for remands, where they will be tortured brutally. Is it the price that the people have to pay for visiting the country?

They are blatantly called militants or have links with terror groups. Which terror group? RSO? But it is too much for a country that has always officially denied the existence of RSO. Besides, in early June 2014, during Burma-Bangladesh Border Crisis, Cox’s Bazaar Sector BGB Colonel Khandakar Farid Hasan rejected the allegation that the RSO maintains its Bases on Bangladesh’s soil.

After that, how has RSO suddenly been given the life back? Well, by now, you may have known how and why.

Not only Bangladesh but also Burma has denied the existence of such an armed Rohingya militant group.Eleven Media RSO

In fact, many of the Burma experts have denied the existence of RSO. Please read: Experts Reject Claims of ‘Rohingya Mujahideen’ Insurgency

However, Bangladesh government is certainly expected to come up with the reports that those arrested people have strong links with the terror groups. Because that is pre-determined! At least, the situation appears so. There are reports that the arrestees are being brutally tortured in the remands. The police will force them to confess that they have terror links even if they don’t.

On the other hand, Burmese regime is not expected to sit idle if they feel threatened in this geopolitical power struggle. They will play their games and take counter-actions. Of course, at the expense of the weak and voiceless Rohingya community!

Coming to the point, the RSO has been disbanded long ago and is practically non-existent today. Hence, the people arrested can be anything else but certainly NOT militants or terror-group linked or what Bangladesh/ Bangladesh media want to portray them. Therefore, Rohingya people demand Bangladesh government for their release for they were arrested for a wrong accusation. All the justice loving people worldwide are requested to stand-by this call.
