1-     Rohingyas Facing Hardship in Lives Due to Threats by Authority

Many poor Rohingya people in the village of Kyein Chaung (Bawli Bazaar), northern Maungdaw, lead their livelihoods by gathering wood and firewood from nearby forests and selling them in local markets. Therefore, they need to pay money to forestry department for access permits to the forests.

On 28th April 2014, SaRaPha (Military Security and Intelligence), Police, Security Force (Hlun Htein) and SB (Special Branch Police) issued a combined declaration that Rohingya wood-gatherers have to pay Kyat 50,000 to the said authority. Else, they threatened to arrest the Rohingya people. The wood-gatherers had to stop their work as they are unable to pay Kyat 250,000 to different departments of Maungdaw authority.  They are facing troubles to lead their livelihoods.

2-     Rakhine Extremists Stole Four Goats Belong to Rohingya

On 30th April 2014, U Kay Hti Maung @U Hla Kyi, a Rakhine extremist from the village of Kingg Chaung of Duchiradan (Kilaidaung) village tract, stole four goats (livestock) belong to Abubakkar Siddique (son of) Abdul Hashim (of age 43) of the (Duchiradan) village. The four goats were worth Kyat 200,000 in total. When Abubakkar Siddique’s wife asked U Kay Hti Maung to return the goat, he threatened her to get her shot by Police.

3-     Military Brutally Beat Up a Rohingya

Din Mohammed (son of) Sultan (of age 20) is local of the village of Bazaar Fara of Thu Oo Hla (Koolar Bil) village, northern Maungdaw. Around 3PM on 28th April 2014, two Military personnel from Infantry Battalion 233 located in the village brutally beat him up just because he asked them when they would be able to pay debts they owe him. Din Mohammed runs a shop in the village and they bought goods from his shop on credit on 26th February 2014.

4-     Police Trying to Arrest Two Rohingyas on False Allegations

Around 11PM on 28th April 2014, Deputy Police Chief U Kan Hla and other police officers raided the homes of Shawkat Ullah (son of) Noor Ahmed and Umar Abbas (son of) Ismail hail from the villages of Thinbaw Kway (Kullon) and Kyauk Pandu (Shitaaf) respectively. The police searched for them. They tried to arrest them under false accusation of having connection with robbers in the region. Besides, the police harassed the villagers badly. Therefore, the villagers are worried that there would be another situation that happened in the village of Duchiradan (Kilaidaung) in January 2014.

5-     Money Extortion by Security Force: Case #1

Around 6AM on 31st April 2014, Security Force at check-post of Gawduthara (Gawdusara) bridge arrested and detained Mohammed Ayub (son of) Abdur Rahim (of age 23) and his friend looking after a fishery pond. His friend was released after a short while. However, Ayub was only released at 11AM of the day. The Security Force extorted Kyat 220,000 for his releasbye accusing him of possessing illegal Bangladeshi mobile phone.

6-     Money Extortion by Security Force: Case #2

Around 1AM on 28th April 2014, Security Force at the Camp in the village of Thinbaw Kway (Kullon), southern Maungdaw, raided the homes of Nurul Hoque (son of) Sayedur Rahman and Abdullah (son of) Hamidullah. Then, they arrested the two Rohingyas under the accusation of being human traffickers and detained them in a cow-hut belongs to the village administrator. They demanded Kyat 800,000 for his release. Since they refused to pay the money, they are now detained in the Inn Dinn (Aan Daang) police station. On 30th April 2014 morning, the police released them having extorted Kyat 50,000 from them.

7-     Money Extortion by Security Force: Case #3

On 30th April 2014 morning, Habiullah (son of) Jamil hails from the village of Du-Nyaung-Pin-Gyi (Shaira Fara) visited his relatives in Thinbaw Kway (Kullon) in southern Maungdaw. Security Force (Hlun Htein) and the village administrator, Zokoria, extorted Kyat 300,000 from accusing him of being a human trafficker.
