Maungdaw – The Burmese Border Guard Police (BGP) raped a minor Rohingya girl in northern Maungdaw on Thursday (October 27) afternoon, an eyewitness said.
While the 10-year-old Rohingya girl was herding her family-owned cattle at ‘Yae Aung Chaung’ hamlet of ‘Mi Htaik’ village tract under ‘Taung Pyo’ sub-township around 2 PM of the day, three BGP Personnel patrolling in the region assaulted her and one of them subsequently raped her.
“Two BGP personnel held her hands tightly, while another one raped her. As soon as we saw that, we quickly ran into our village and informed the people. As the people came for her rescue, the BGP ran away”, said a cow-herding boy who witnessed the incident.
Since the villagers rushed to rescue, only one of the three BGP personnel was able to rape her and other two had to flee the spot. However, the girl was seriously injured, according to a villager.
This rape incident has added to the long list of the rapes by the Burmese armed forces against the Rohingya women in Maungdaw since October 9. The armed forces have been using rapes to dehumanize the civilians and as the weapon of war.
