Besieged Rohingya Community in Mrauk-U Face Starvation

By Aung Aung

Mrauk U, Arakan State (Rohingyta Vision)-1000s of Rohingyas face starvation right now in Mrauk U, due to an official order which prevents them from moving out of their villages according to the reliable sources.

Around 45000 people in 13 villages live in precarious condition in Mrauk U (Fatthar- Killa). Some people hardly could cultivate for their survival. Others rely on WFP for rice whose house has been burnt down in 2012 violation.

Beside genocidal blockage, some persecuted Rohingya very hardly worked day and night in Arakan (Rakhine) villages up to June 2015. But recently, town administrator of Mrauk U issued an official order which do not allow any Rohingya to move out of their own villages.

From 5th– 9th July 2015, town administrator issued announcement not to allow any Rohingya moving one place to another with the intention to wipe these Rohingyas under genocidal blockage.

Unable to work now 1000s of Rohingya starving right now, they became worse than refugees in their own houses. Nearly 25000 of Rohingya in 13 villages are in urgent need of rice.

Although Turkish group donated for Iftar expenses recently. And some families who have a family member abroad, are provided by them. But still all these measures are not enough for these large numbers of villagers, so the starvation level is getting worst day by day.

Since 2012, no Rohingya could repair their houses. No proper roofs, walls or shelters are allowed to build to protect when raining. So Villagers are living in miserable and inhuman conditions. More than half of Rohingya population in Mrauk U live in state of poverty.

Before 2012 those who had shops, were merchants, were workers and carpenters, became jobless after the dreadful violence 2012. Due to the critical situations, whatever ancestral property or belongings they poses had to sell to Rakhine for their basic survive.

Rohingya in Mrauk U had a peaceful life before 2012. Rakhine and Rohingya in Mrauk U have been living very peacefully since centuries ago. There were are many historical places like Mosques, Monasteries, etc in Royal Palace of Mrauk U kingdom. Which are evidence of peaceful existence of both the communities. Thein Sein government’s sponsored violence in 2012 and 2013 divided these two communities. And government keeps Rohingya of Mrauk U under genocidal blockage like other Rohingya in Arakan State, as a State’s plan of Rohingya Genocide.
