Authorities Extorts Money by Tortures & Threats

Buthidaung: Burmese authorities uses different baseless allegations, threats and abusive physical tortures to extort money from Rohingyas in different villages of Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships, complains victims.

A Rohingya hailing from the village of Tong Ruwa, Rohingyadong of Buthidaung Township have been tortured inhumane by the Sa Ra Pha and to safeguard his life he was forced to pay 450, 000 Kyats on 9th January 2018.

He was identified to be Muhammed Johar S/O Ataullah, who was called by the Sa Ra Pha officers while he was going to Maungdaw market to buy household goods. Johar is not the first and last victim of this group, which usually tortures Rohingya physically to extort mass money.

Similar incidences are also taking place in other villages of Buthidaung Township beside the battalion no. 3, where Border Guard Police (BGP) along with Ma Ka Pha officers are jointly extorting money from Rohingyas.

In addition or removal of any members of family to the family list they usually demands a sum of money. For addition of a new born child a Rohingya must pay 5000 Kyats and for addition of a new bride the range goes up to 100, 000 Kyats/person.

Due to the mass extortion of money in those areas villagers are in extreme outcry of help from activist and international organizations to stop these inhumane activities in the region.

Authorities’ money extortion are also taking place in Maungdaw Township where Police along with sycophants and village administrator are harassing youths in Salifarang village. In this village youths are accused as members of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and are threatened to be detained in refusal of their money extortion.
