Interior ministers from countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations will discuss Rohingya migrants. Representatives are expected to call on countries to cooperate in cracking down on human trafficking groups.

They will gather in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday.

They will discuss how to accept the migrants and ways of preventing human trafficking.

The Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic minority group in Myanmar, have been oppressed. Many of them are heading to nearby countries by boat. A number of bodies suspected to be those of Rohingya people were discovered in Thailand and Malaysia in May.

Concern is rising that many Rohingya have become victims of human trafficking by smuggling groups.

In Thailand, a senior military officer and a mayor were arrested on suspicion of involvement in human trafficking.
