PETALING JAYA: The Rohingya crisis is fertile ground for the Islamic State to find new recruits.
This was the warning from Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein. He said about the Rohingya: “I am worried that if we push them into a corner, they would have no choice but to join and support IS.”
Hishammuddin was reported by Staronline news portal as saying that with the West going all out to wipe out terrorism, the militants may need to find refuge outside of Iraq and Syria.
“If not southern Thailand or southern Philippines, it could be the Rohingya area, Rakhine,” he said referring to the Myanmar territory.
He called for the Rohingya crisis to be tackled immediately.
“The Government’s stance is clear as our Prime Minister has received the cooperation and support of the Cabinet to hold a meeting with the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to discuss the issue,” he said.
The minister, who is also the MP for Sembrong, was speaking to reporters after attending a Maulidur Rasul celebration and presentation of land grant to residents in Felda Ulu Penggeli here today.
