An innocent Rohingya was arrested by the Border Guard Police (BGP) in Rathedaung Township on Monday, who was said to have been being tortured in the custody and missing since then, locals report.

The victim is identified to be Mr. Hussein Ali, a Rohingya farmer hails from Sin Kone Dan village, Rathedaung Township. He was arbitrarily accused of theft by a Rakhine extremist.

“On October 27, U Maung Hla Phru, a Rakhine extremist from Zeyar Min village, spread a rumor that his cow had gone missing. So, he was seen looking for the cow nearby a Rohingya village called Sin Kone Dan.

Then, on October 28, the extremist targeted a random Rohingya in Sin Kone Dan, U Hussein Ali, and lodged a police complaint accusing him of stealing the cow. Hence, Border Guard Police (BGP) from Nyaung Chaung BGP Commandment Area arrested Hussein and severely tortured him in the detention.

Other Rohingyas dare not approach the authority to ask his whereabouts as none of them is allowed to move from one village to another.

Upon finding him innocent, the police released him after extorting Kyat 70,000 from him.

Nevertheless, the Rakhine extremist, U Maung Hla Phru, dissatisfied with the release of U Hussein, lodged another arbitrary complaint against him to the police. The police arrested U Hussein again on November 10 and took him to an unidentified location.

Since then, U Hussein has been incommunicado” said a local Rohingya on the condition of anonymity.

“U Hussein is a poor farmer and only source of income for his whole. He earns his livelihoods through his daily work. Due to his disappearance, his family certainly looks to find difficult to survive.

Other Rohingyas dare not approach the authority to ask his whereabouts as none of them is allowed to move from one village to another.

Besides, the BGP and military torture and loot the already crippled Rohingya community here. It is really worrisome situation” he continued.
